Apollonia

When purple diva Vanity pulled out of Purple Rain the race was on for Prince to find a replacement. He needed to look no further than Patricia Kotero whom he renamed Apollonia and put to work recording with the remaining members of Vanity 6, who were now renamed Apollonia 6. Work was completed on the album and the movie was shot in 1983. It opened to huge success in 1984 and Apollonia was now well and truly in the public eye. The first single Sex Shooter was released but bizarrely flopped. In fact the group's only chart entry was Apollonia’s duet with Prince ‘Take Me With You’ which was a Billboard Top 40 hit.

Oh no she didn't! 

The group disbanded after the second single Blue Limousine and the album flopped. Apollonia joined the cast of Falcon Crest as a struggling singer in 1985. As it was one of the biggest shows at the time Apollonia’s arrival got lots of publicity and annoyed many of her new cast mates. Fellow new arrival and soap legend Morgan Fairchild was rumoured to be the most aggrieved, her character was hardly given any screen time and Apollonia, who was pretty much a novice, was getting half the show! Apollonia abruptly left the cast mid season reportedly on the orders of main star Jane Wyman who’d had enough of the young singer hogging her show with her tacky outfits and musical numbers!

In 1989 Apollonia released her first solo CD. The whole project was a commercial flop. The lead single Since I Fell For You was poorly received and the second single The Same Dream, a brilliant Freestyle inspired epic was brutally ignored. In a last ditch attempt to save the album a final single Mismatch was released, but bombed. No matter how many funky remixes she put out nobody cared about Apollonia anymore. It’s fair to say the album is pretty pointless, apart from the singles it’s very generic, but there is no way it deserved to do that bad. She was dropped by Warner Bros. Record shortly afterwards.

She made a few more movies including Back To Back with Bill Paxton and Black Magic Woman with mark Hamill of Star Wars fame. These days Apollonia isn't very active in music or movies, we hope she's well and will at least try and put out a tragic remix of Sex Shooter in the very near future.
