Betty Boo

Betty Boo’s first single was entitled Hey DJ (I Can’t Dance To The Music You’re Playing) with The Beatmasters. The track was a strong indicator of the sound Betty would adopt for her first and second albums. Using samples and and strong melodies to create cutting edge but extremely poppy rap singles. My favourite line from it has to be:

 “Betty Boo-mania!”

Her debut platinum album Boomania was released shortly after her second single Doin’ The Do.  Which to the day is probably considered her signature tune, although the follow up Where Are You Baby was even more popular in its slightly remixed single form. The final single 24 Hours was a departure showcasing the diversity of Betty’s artisty as she proved to the world she too could shamelessly rip off Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul!

"Catch me I'm falling..."

She adopted a sex kitten image for her next album, Grrrr Its Betty Boo! The album, perhaps one of the most undeserved and tragic flops of our generation was a commercial bomb. The beautiful lead single Let Me Take You There is a perfect slice of summery pop/rap with a lovely retro vibe. Its one of those tracks you just can’t praise enough, but even by 1992 Betty was considered passé and she had to settle for Top 20 chart position. The faster paced follow up I’m On My Way did little to generate interest and it peaked outside the Top 40. There is a fabulous version called I’m On My Way (Boo Choons) which is a must have for any fan.

Betty saved the best for last, her final single Hangover was released in 1993. Another epic single completely ignored by everyone but the coolest of pop trash pickers. Thing Goin On (remixed by MK) and Catch Me (remixed by David Morales) were US singles. Catch Me is absolutely wonderful, perhaps the second best track on the album. Betty was mercilessly dropped from her label, but soon found interest from celebrity Boo fan, Madonna! Who’d started her own label, Maverick. Sadly Betty’s mother became ill and she quite rightly, if regrettably, put her career on hold.

Completely out of the blue Betty hit headlines when she co-wrote the hit single for Hear’Say, the British Popstars winners in 2000 (it was a slow news day). The track, Pure And Simple, sold far too many copies but did manage to ignite a bit of interest in Betty again. In 2006 she teamed up with Blur guitarist Alex James and started the group WigWam. The video got a bit of airplay, but it was a big old flop and they disbanded. But never fear Betty has a new song coming out. Its credited to Jack Rokka vs. Betty Boo and its called Take Off. Its being released by Gusto Records and is already a Top 10 club hit.
