One of the best songs of 2007 is Melinda Jackson's brilliant debut solo single, "Fall In Love". Australian pop music has rarely sounded so inspired. "Fall In Love" didn’t exactly set the charts on fire but that is to be expected in a country where the sound of drowning cat on Valium (i.e. Missy Higgins) passes for popular music.
Everywhere
Melinda
first appeared our pop trash radar as the guest vocalist
for Moustache’s amazing cover of Fleetwood Mac's
"Everywhere". The song was, and still is, a
massive breath of fresh air. “Everywhere” is
completely transformed into a pop anthem complete with
retro synthesisers that would make Infernal foam with
jealousy. In fact, the comparison with Infernal is apt.
Moustache do for "Everywhere", what Infernal did
for Laura Branigan's "Self Control".
“Everywhere” was released in 2005 and became a massive
dance hit before crossing over to the mainstream Charts.
Melinda’s solo single was highly anticipated but no one
expected it to be this good.
Fall
In Love
“Fall
In Love” represents everything that is holy about music.
It's catchy, poptastic and vaguely ridiculous. The song is
accompanied by an excellent video clip, which proves that
a huge budget isn’t required to come up with something
visually stunning. According to her website, Melinda is
busily working on her debut album. Melinda’s record
company, iSPY, is currently showcasing a new song by
Melinda called "Magic" on their Myspace. The
title could not be more appropriate. "Magic" is
a brilliant follow up to "Fall In Love" and it
becomes more addictive with each listen. The song is
somewhat reminiscent of Gwen Stefani's "The Real
Thing", with its sweet melody and warm synth
soundscape. If these two songs are any indication, then
Melinda's new album will blow the other pop pretenders out
of the water!
Melinda's
debut album, intriguingly titled "Desperate
Dolly", is scheduled for release in early 2008
