Rebekah K

One of the most obscure Australian pop trash divas is the divine Rebekah K, whose career discography is comprised of only two singles. Ms K was signed as an 18 year old and heavily promoted as Australia ’s new pop princess. She released her debut single in 2002, appearing on various television shows and touring with the Rumba festival. Her debut single, “Be My Baby”, is a vastly improved version of an old Vanessa Paradis hit. The song has become slightly infamous in some circles for turning Vanessa’s sultry anthem into a wonderfully “lowbrow” slice of bubblegum pop. Some people have no appreciate for the finer things in life! "Be My Baby" is great fun but its B-side is the real jewel.

Fierce B-Side

"Fire Engine" is one of the cutest pop songs ever to end up as the B-side for a trashtastic flop. The song recalls the Teen Queens' brand of retro-pop without feeling quite as laboured. Amusingly, the song was written by tragic pop diva Toni Pearen. That would explain why the song contains some of the most ridiculous lyrics ever recorded. "Fire Engine" is an unexpected piece of Euro-pop heaven and is definitely worth hunting down.

Another Cover

Rebekah followed her stunning Paradis cover with the exquisite and equally floptastic "Everything I Do" in 2003. The song is another cover version of a European hit, only this time Swedish diva Ann Winsborn has the honour. “Everything I Do” is a significant improvement on "Be My Baby" and in retrospect, is really quite outstanding. "Everything I Do" sounds very similar to Dannii's output circa "Neon Nights". Yes, it's that good! The song's failure can possibly be explained by the distressing cover photo, on which Rebekah look alarmingly similar to Delta Goodrem. Thankfully, the music bears no such likeness!

M.I.A.

I think it's high time that Miss K released some new material. She’s not only a fabulous pop diva but her ability to reinterpret obscure European hits is unrivalled on the Australian music scene. Rebekah is still in the business, occasionally performing as the opening act for the odd Australian Idol reject. This woman's talent is too overwhelming to remain untapped. The Rebekah K revival starts here!!
