Sinitta had spent many years
appearing in musicals and low budget movies before
enjoying her first hit single So Macho on Fanfare Records
in 1986. The single is now legendary for having one of the
worst music videos of all time featuring Sinitta and a mad
doctor. It’s truly horrendous and a staple of those
never-ending countdowns that VH1 frequently air. The
b-side to Cruising is the hilarious hiNRG ‘Cruising’
in which Sinitta admits to her passion for picking up men.
It’s a classic. Her second single was the brilliant
Feels Like The First Time, a Latin Freestyle inspired
number which threatened to be an early nail in her pop
coffin when it flopped in late 1986.
"H'es got a big! Red! G.T.O.!"
Never
one to be deterred Sinitta took up with pop producers
Stock Aitken Waterman. Singles like Toy Boy, GTO and Cross
My Broken Heart were the stuff pop dreams are made of and
were huge hits in 1987 making Sinitta one of the biggest
singles acts of the year in the
UK
. The album did quite well too. Quite often it was
Sinitta’s outrageous fashion sense that garnered her
most attention. Sinitta brought tacky 80’s hooker chic
to the masses and became a tabloid favourite.
Wicked!
After
five singles Sinitta began work on her second album,
Wicked, with Stock Aitken Waterman but when the first
single I Don’t Believe In Miracles failed to reach the
Top 10 they lost interest and shunted her onto their
underlings and a good thing too! The second single Right
Back Where We Started From was one of Sinitta’s biggest
hits and a big seller of 1988. Further singles didn’t do
quite as well but Love On A Mountain Top reached the Top
20. Sadly the album flopped and singles like Hitchin’ A
Ride and Lay Me Down Easy did little to attract buyers.
